FOR NEARLY 100 YEARS, THE PICKARD FAMILY HAS FARMED AND RANCHED IN COLORADO.
It all began in the early 1930’s, when Jim and Marie Pickard and their young family left the Oklahoma Panhandle in search of more fertile soil. They found what they were looking for on a small bit of acreage northeast of Vona. Their own patch of flat, alluvial plain perched on the edge of rolling sagebrush-covered sand hills. Through a combination of hard work, perseverance and perhaps some divine intervention, they kept acquiring land and raised six children: Harold, Leona, Louis, Kenneth, Velma and Fern. They battled the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression, floods and dry spells, the occasional plague of locusts and an often fickle market; managing to thrive in a place and at a time that drove many others toward literally greener pastures. They passed their passion for working the land to their children; none of whom ventured far away from either the home place or their farming roots. Now, third and fourth generation family members are working to expand the legacy Jim and Marie began, collectively owning and operating thousands of acres across the county, readying it for the generations to come.
It is in that spirit that the Pickard Land Company was created, to carry on the lessons and legacy of Jim and Marie, and to be stewards of the land.
We are honored and humbled to carry on the Pickard family's work and tradition, with the deepest respect for those who came before us.
